The steering wheel is the driver’s primary interface with his car. Apart from the obvious use of steering the car around the circuit, the wheel is a complex and highly technical piece of equipment which gives the driver the information that he needs to drive the car, and the facility to tune the car for various situations as they arise out on track. Michael Schumacher explains the different functions which can be found around the wheel…

MercedesBenzOwnersClub Nico Rosberg explains his driving position
April 22nd, 2012
MercedesBenzOwnersClub
The seating position in a Formula One car is nothing like what we know in road cars. The driver’s feet will point upwards and visibility always is critical as they need to be as low as possible in the car not to compromise its centre of gravity. Nico explains how it feels in the car.
BAHRAIN, SATURDAY – NICO: “I THINK THAT I’M IN A GOOD POSITION FOR THE RACE”
April 22nd, 2012
MercedesBenzOwnersClub
“In general, I felt very comfortable during qualifying today” said Nico after the session. “However, as we have been focusing on our race pace, there is always a compromise in the qualifying set-up. I think that I’m in a good position for the race for tomorrow.
I am the only driver in the top five who has a set of new option tyres which can be very useful at this circuit. It will be very important to drive carefully, and find the right tyre management in the race, as the conditions are very tough out there.”
BAHRAIN, SATURDAY – MICHAEL: “PUSH AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TOMORROW”
April 22nd, 2012
MercedesBenzOwnersClub
Michael was obviously very disappointed to have qualified in 18th position on the grid for a race which “looks to be quite competitive for us”. “Unfortunately on my fast lap, which was looking quite good, my DRS broke in the last sector.
We tried to fix it in the garage but were not able to go out again. Trying for a lap without DRS on different tyres would not have made sense. We now have to try to see what we can do from here and push as much as possible.”
Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon
February 9th, 2012
MercedesBenzOwnersClub
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon is an executive saloon which is targeted at the younger executive buyer and in the marketplace it is pitted against the BMW 3 Series and the Audi A4, but the special selling point of the C-Class is that extra touch of panache that comes with a Mercedes which you can view at Motors.
The car has an exciting engine line up which starts with the C180K and the C200K (K of course stands for Kompressor, which means that they are supercharged). Both of these engines are quite spritely and the faster of the two will accelerate the car from rest to 62 mph in just 8.8 seconds. Recently the C180K BlueEFFICIENCY has been added to the range, which has lower fuel consumption and emissions.
Next are the C230 and C280 petrol units which although lager than the above they are ordinarily aspirated. The overall effect is to provide similar performance in terms of power and acceleration. There is also a C350 petrol engine which is the most powerful and which will accelerate the car to 62 mph in just 6.4 seconds.
The diesel engines include the C200 CDI, the C220 CDI with a 0 to 62 mph time of 8.5 seconds and the C320 CDI with performance figures very similar to the C350 but with better low down torque.
Gearbox choices include a seven-speed semi-automatic, a five-speed automatic and a six speed manual.
The C-Class Saloon handles exactly as you would expect this class of car to handle. It is fast, responsive, safe, comfortable, and when you need an extra touch of pace it is ready to provide it with ease, especially when you hit the button that transforms it from comfort made to sport.
The car is very safe with five stars in the EuroNCAP crash test. There are seven airbags and a number of innovative electronic safety aids including PRE-SAFE which prepares the car for a potential crash.

Mercedes-Benz: A Winning Brand
February 4th, 2012
dave787 When 6,000 UK shoppers were asked which brands they would recommend most to their friends or colleagues – guess who came out on top?
With a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 66% Mercedes-Benz ranked second (just behind haircare brand Kerastase with 80%) outdoing the likes of Apple iPhone in third place (60%), Cohiba in sixth (57%) and Audi in ninth (52%).
Calculated by the percentage of people rating the brand highly on a scale of 1–10, minus the percentage of those rating it between 0-6 – the NPS is a good indicator of consumer attitudes in the UK.
Bain & Company, the authors of the report, say that advocates such as family, partners, friends and experts are the single-most important influence on brand choice. So all in all, we’re delighted to be rated one of the UK’s top 10 most advocated brands – second to premium haircare of course!
Mercedes-Benz Concept B-Class E-CELL PLUS – The best of both worlds
February 4th, 2012
dave787 Scheduled for European production* in 2014, the Mercedes-Benz Concept B-Class E-CELL PLUS adds an all-purpose battery-powered model with Range Extender to our portfolio of electric vehicles.
Utilising a powerful lithium-ion battery pack located in a false floor at the rear called the ‘Energy Space’, the Concept B-Class E-CELL PLUS offers up to 62 emission-free miles in all-electric mode. However, with a total range of 373 miles thanks to its additional three-cylinder combustion engine – this plug-in series hybrid ultimately combines the best of both worlds.
In simple terms, there are two operating modes that depend on how much charge status the battery has. When it has sufficient energy the vehicle runs on electric power alone, generating a peak output of 100 kW and a continuous output of 70 kW. When the battery charge drops below a certain limit the petrol engine kicks in.
The battery can be charged using any standard domestic power outlet or at a public charging station, as well as by the dual performing combustion engine when driving at low vehicle speeds.
The electric motor and combustion engine interact so intelligently that the drive unit is able to select the most fuel-efficient mode for every driving situation in a fraction of a second. Coupled with an impressive zero to 62 mph in 11 seconds and a top speed of 93 mph in either mode – the Concept B-Class E-CELL PLUS is firmly on course to become the electric all-rounder of the future.
